Hey Omelenko,, are those as light as they are big?? They look nice and light like they'd be really easy to play. I've got Shekere envy!

Yes, they are very light and easy to play. I used to play them alot when I played with this African music group and on occasional rumbas. Don't play them much these days.

There are a variety of gourds used, the most typical are african kettle gourds and larger bottle gourds,
other gourd varieties are also suitable.

This is the farm I go to, they have a good examples page, however the gourds have more variation in size and
shape than the few samples shown.

Thanks Geordie, Gonna see what I can grow here in UK - may end up with thumbsized, 3 bead shekere but...

I've seen some Chekeres with the string trailing off the bottom, a la Congadelicas. This question is to those who have played ones like that: Do you find the strings get in the way of playing?

I have not had any problem with the string you dont even notice it . once you start to play concentration kicks . :P
