Hi Abakua

I knew you would enjoy these posts after seeing yours...

I could make them bigger, yes but it would take some time. If you want, I can just send them to you. The original pics are huge.

See ya and we stay in touch buddy.

Wow, beautiful. Well i make the cancamo barrels. I heard they're better for our weather. I heard the torniquette and cunya barrels are hard to maintain. Is that true? By the way, how does the x-ray film sound compared to skin?

Well done, buddy!!!
Those gwokas remind me of our rioplatense´s drums, the tamboriles de candombe...I wish I could find some liquor barrel that calls me to give him life...with my own hands!!!
Keep up that good work, man...and thanks for sharing it!

What an awesome reference! Akdom, Thanks for taking the time to share with us this step by step construction. I'll be keeping my eyes out for an old barrell. By the way, I'm assuming that goat skin is the natural skin of choice for gwoka correct?

Skills! nice demo... you could use an X-ray of some real bones and stuff, maybe a skull... only visible when you hold it up to the light, a cool secret feature!

I do not know about the different barrels..
The x ray is really great since there is almost no maintenance. Just one turn of pegs every now and then. But I have to admit that the sound is not the best. It has good high pitch, but basses are just so so. And it doesn't have the warmth of animal skin.

Akdom,

I found an old wine barrell at an antique shop for $12.50! I'm at step 2 of your process (glueing the exterior of the barrell) I can't tell you how thankful I am for this post. You are the MAN! Vraiment en forme! Merci mille fois!

Great post - I recenty made a bomba drum using the traditional torniquete tuning method, which is in all respects essentially identical to the gwoka guadelupeen.

As for the originals:

That is, essentially, a myth. Actually, with intense humidity in many parts of PR, the traditional tuning systems could arguably be even more of a headache over there....
See, I'm in Chicago... it's 8 degrees outside right now, and the barril sounds fine... The group Alma Moyó in NYC also uses bombas de torniquete with no problem. You just have to set the tuning up really tight, and try not to expse the drums to changes in temperature to much...
