... or does it even have a name? "Cua" is the closest I've come to a name for it so far.

I found a video and there is a guy off to the right of the screen striking sticks on what looks like a small barrel that he has set on top of a stand. You can catch a glimpse of it maybe 4-5 times throughout the video.

The video is at this page:

scroll down to the red box and click on the link that says "Puerto Rican Bomba Drum & Dance, Here" to pull up the video.

Oooh... I think I just found out that the sticks themselves are the "cua's". If that's the case, then what is the name of what the man is striking?

Is this not working for you? I was able to pull it up without trouble, though it did take a little time to load on my slow computer.

ok, found it.

It looks like a rounded off tambora, but does not appear to be any heads??
that is weird. By the sound of it, its sounds more of a drum than a cata.

Yeah, its called Cua. Its just a guagua for bomba. Basically, its a little barrel played with sticks to keep time. It is hollow without heads.

So the barrel is also called a cua, and not just the sticks?

I understand the cuá or fuá to be just the two sticks.

Then that still begs the question of what the barrel itself might be called...

Cua is the barrel, which you can also use large bamboo sticks. Theyre used to keep the timing in Bomba from Puerto Rico. The Cua is hit by 2 sticks.
