I was just thinking it might be a cool idea to have either a Tambora Forum or a "Tambora Book" to study some of the major patterns of a Tambora.

The first time I saw a Tambora used beyond the usual standard Merengue application was in a percussion duel between the conguero and tamborero of Juan Luis Guerra. I saw Guerra perform in Puerto Rico, and the percussionists went off on a competition for about 10 minutes. I had never seen a tamborero display such rudimental work before...and it opened my eyes to the extensibility of a Tambora as an instrument that can go beyond merengue.

Just a thought.

Saludos,I could see that you could have a discussion of that subject in this section without any problem,in relation to the book,it is up to people which have been extensively using that instrument to make one in that subject.Dr. Zaragemca

Hola Firebrand,

I believe you are refering to Chichi Peralta on tumbadoras and "Chocolate" on tambora. The rhythmic and melodic interaction those two can create is a killer. Check out "Chocolate" tribute to the late tamborero "Catarey" on 440's tune "Angel para una Tambora".

Anyway, I think you can benefit from this:

I own it's original version and throughly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about this beautiful instrument.

cool stuff...i'll check that book out. I'm not sure what performer I was watching in PR (it was 2-3 years ago), but the Tambora player was off da heezy! (sorry...too much hip-hop immersion).

Tamboras are great...and with the Guira, it's the highest gear
of drumming you can experience. The Guira player
also had a Kick Bass drum, and there was a Conga player
to make it a 3 man percussion section.

I went to see Joseito MAteo ( The King of Merengue) perform last October.
WOW!! the energy was immense. I think he was in his late 70s or older.

There seems to be no formal learning materials - you just have to
start doing it and watching others. Lately YouTube has had some
Tambora players strutting their stuff.

I am behind on this tambora thread but I think that would be great if a Tambora book could be developed on CongaPlace. It seems like there is not a lot of info out there on tambora but whatever anyone can find I am interested. I have to admit I am not a tambora player but would like to become one, I play some hand and stick merengue patterns on congas but I would not claim to be a player. Out of respect, the real tambora players have a skill level that I cannot even touch!
