I've been thinking of getting a tambora, but I'd like to know who is currently making them and at what level of quality--

So far, I am aware of:

XS (cheapie?)
Mano (cheapie?)
Rhythm Traders (cheapie?)
LP (mid-grade?)
Meinl (mid-grade?)
Caribbean Rhythms (range of quality???)
Timba (probably pretty nice stuff?? high end?)
Moperc (probably pretty nice stuff?? high end?)
Sol (probably pretty nice stuff?? high end?)

And what about high-end stuff? Matt Smith/Ritmo? JCR? Who?

One last thing I am curious about-- why does LP offer a version with a wooden rim and nobody else seems to offer this?

i just discovered that Sol and Moperc make them as well, so I added them to the list.

Would love to hear some feedback from tambora owners.

HI! i just got a guira from The Dominican Republic, done by an artesano, is really nice...it was pass down by my family
it was in a Bronx basement, it is very nice.
It has the name of the artesano carved into the guira.

It was a gift, since the musician of the family went back to D.R , and has not been musically active, it was passed down to me, to keep the torch alive along with some great vontage bells.

I just need a better scraper, as the one that they gave me is very vintage, and rustic.
I will post the neame of the artesano when i go look at the guira.
I think he put all of the family's last names, it has like five last name inscribed.

Sol is not in business anymore, the drum maker Akbar now heads the production
for DW Gon Bops.

Neftali,

I bought a rope-tuned tambora (traditional size) on eBay from "El seƱor tambora" and I can tell you that there is nothing like it. The only drawback is the tuning part and the cost of maintenance, since the rattan poles for the rims need to be raplaced at least once a year if you use it everyday.

Here is a Perico Ripiao size one:

Good Luck!

I guess I'm way too late for a reply, but I've just joined the forum. Just in case anyone is out there reading, and for the benefit of others like me that may come later, I do have excellent contacts in DR. I do own three tamboras, and two guiras. For the Tamboras, I strongly recommend Carlos Perez and for the guiras, Guillermo Guira who has a shop in Santo Domingo and the other one is El Buty Guira, who has a shop in Santiago.

Downside is that you must know someone that travels to DR, as shipping costs are extremele high, plus neither Carlos Perez or Guillermo ship instruments. Not sure about El Buty.

I do travel to DR often, so if I can be of assistance just PM me.
