Whats up! I want to know if oak is a good wood for making a block for playing palitos. I have some left over wood that I can use. I'm thinking of making a U shape 5" x 10" frame from a square 3/4"rod putting one board 1/2" on one side and 1/4" on the other then leaving one side open. Its not a big job but I figured I check with you guys before just in case it would be a waste of time. Thanks

Alright, I went ahead and did it anyway. I left it barebones no sanding or anything first I want to see if it serves its purpose. the 1/2 inch side sound pretty dead maybe because of the thickness of the wood the 1/4 inch side sounds good ( cracked a little because of pressure from screws ) I compared the sound to some recordings and it was close, a little loud for my taste. I was bored today ( sick day ) so I decided to experiment with this.

I made half a clave with oak (ie. the fat one with the hole drilled through it and the sort of cut away curve for your hand). The basic striking stick is just an old cheapy store bought.

It is a little dead - but also a little warm too. All in all not bad for a free peice if scrap wood and an hours work.

Its always very cool to make something yourself.

My favourite shaker is a pringles can filled with some kind of mystery lentels from my roomates cupboard I made many moons ago when I was a starving student - why I didn't just eat them I'll never know - but I'm glad I didn't.

I'll try that - bet it sounds as good as it tastes (maybe I'll make a couple).
