I've seen people playing the palito pattern on a large wooden something-or-other that they have on a stand. An example is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIjQv3vq7BM

What is this instrument? Where can I get one?

The only thing that I saw in the video that appeared to be on a stand was at the beginning, but it looked to be brass and not wood.

The only wooden instruments I saw were cajons and conga-cajons.

You're right. I thought that the clanging was coming from somewhere else. Still: what the heck is that thing?

What you are hearing is NOT the big round wooden palitos on top, he's playing a (metal) bell underneath it.

The large wood cylinder on top is made by the same guy that made all of these instruments, but it's wood, not metal. This Columbia is using a metal bell and it's mounted below the palitos.

Agree with Congamik. It's a bell (or cencerro) sound; the wood instrument that you see is a kind of catà.

I see,

The bell is usually played on a guataca - or a hoe blade, the cata is played on bamboo.

I didn't see that big round thing on Fat Conga's site. Where is it?
