They are great to play small venues and to be used, with a good mic or accoustic, as a to get a conga effect. However, the best thing I've seen them is as a practice tool. People use it to get your "braqueteo" technique correct. The hard surface helps you a lot.

The original blue ones were no good...they broke easily...The current ones are great.

Saludos!

I tried the Pearl's out, brought them home even. I ended up taking them back. They weren't worth the money, very low volume and when stacked together they weighed too much to carry in the gig bag.

Buy the LP practice congas with backpack if you're looking for an acoustic/lightweight way to play. they sound better and are closer to the conga sound.

I see this is a pretty old thread but I've been interested in the tube cajons so I hope people don't mind a couple more questions. I haven't been able to find a place that carries them around here so I haven't been able to actually look at them.

When you say they have very low volume, how loud are they? Are they loud enough for a small acoustic type setting? Still being a little paranoid about my ears, low volume sounds like something I could play with fewer worries.

Also, I wouldn't expect them to sound just like congas but is the sound decent? How are the slaps, the bass, the open tones?

Chris,

Hate to say this, since I am a Pearl Endorser and Independent Sales Rep here in Puerto Rico, but I stand of what I said originally: they are good to work on your hands technique but with new stuff coming out....don't know.

For playing small venues...Pearl's new Travel Conga, have to admit that competes with the original LP Giovanni Compact Conga, is the best thing I've seen or heard. Even better than LP's. They project greatl and that was confirmed by several top percussionists from other brands that stated Pearl's had a much better product. (Don't take my word...look at this link at Pearl's site that has a video of the Travel Conga. Look at the middle of the page....:

Pearl's difference is that it has an "actual wood base" and has Remo Fyberskins. (The LP Giovanni's have a metal base and they have Evans heads.....Remo's project more sound...The metal body gives LP's a no base sounds "like you are playing a cracker tin box."

I hope this helps!

Saludos!

So Pearl's travel conga actually has bass? I looked at the LP model and noticed a lack of it. How is the volume of the travel conga compared to a regular one?

I'm actually looking for something a bit less loud but I don't want to get something so quiet that you can't do anything with it. Right now I'm just looking to play with friends in the basement or the living room and maybe someday go as far as playing in a coffee shop or something.

Chris,

Don't believe me. Just click on the link below and see it and listen it for yourself.

The only thing you will have to acquire is a snare stand to hold it...after that is ready to go. (The same with LPs)

I think they have a special going on now that if you order during certain period they give you the carrying bag.

Check it out!
