Hey Jorge, I will keep you posted on what happens with Gamo and Jorge Alabe but I don't think they are coming this year. You are in Dallas right? Let me know if there are any clinics coming up in the DFW area and Austin as well. Thanks

Hi Juzzi,

Nice picture.

I have trick to share. To make that lovely long rattle when you run a finger or thumb around the edge, I rub violin bow rosin on the skin.
Works well and the rosin costs peanuts.

What do you think of the Brasilian guys in the link I posted?

Hi Diceman!
I love Suzano. He is the master with pandeiro. Of course the older guys are good also but for me, Suzano is the top player.

Have you tried any "rudiments" with the pandeiro?

Juzzi,

I learned from a Brasilish master who learned from the Mestre Suzano himself, and spoke very little English, so I dont know what you mean by 'rudiments'.
Hey you look like you are having fun in the photo, the ONLY way to play music!!!

Did you play with Mestre Esteves da Silva? He is living in London.
He is a true master in samba.

No I dont play with him, I have seen him, but I have played with the London School of Sambam and the City School. I prefer to play in litle Pagode groups--'Samba da Mesa'
My teacher is called Da Gaita and was a student with Suzana, so his technique is very different as the left hand keeps the pandeiro rocking ALL the time and the fingers are used to play the bass notes as well as the thumb. slaps, heel/toes are the same. The other trick he taught me was instead of using he finger(s) of the left hand to damp the thumb strike, use the left thumb to press the top of the skin--it gives a note rather than a dampened sound. You can play little tunes like that!!
I have the skin quite slack and use as thick a skin as I can get away with, and then put tape on the back. I like a nice deep surdo type sound, which you can get if you use a microphone.

How about you?

Hi Diceman.
I like to play with similar pandeiro as well. Of course, when I'm playing different styles I'm using different pandeiros but for sure Suzano kind of pandeiro is my favourite.

At the moment I am thinking of buying one more from http://www.pandeiro.com. Bira model is what I'll probably get.

Make sure it is not heavy, as it kills your wrist otherwise.

good luck

I have two pandeiros. One made by Bauer and another made by Torelli. The Torelli pandeiro is beautiful, with brass platinelas. It is also very light in weight.

I've not found a teacher and have spent a few years checking out DVDs and doing loads of listening. It's become one of my all time favorite instruments. In fact I think I play the pandeiro more than any other instrument.

I love it! :)

But I much prefer the Torelli pandeiro. It's much lighter and the brass platinelas sound a lot nicer than the steel platinelas on the Bauer.

I always use a natural head on the Bauer and switch between plastic and skin on the Torelli.

I have four Torelli instruments.
They are: Rebolo, large triangle, reco reco and the pandeiro.

These are the Bauer instruments I own: 20 x 12" zabumba. 10" cuica. 10" repinique. 12" wooden repique de mao. Chochalo. Tamborim. Pandeiro. Two samba whistles.

My berimbau is a Gope.

I have always wanted to learn conga patterns to samba and other Brazilian rhythms, but there is no DVD available.
Does anyone know how I can make the jingles on my pandeiro louder?
