Has anyone any experiance of playng or own this? I understand it's kind of archaic and possibly morally questionable, are there any artificial versions available and exatly what kind of sound does it make?

LP makes a version of the quijada, they call it a "vibraslap!" Here is the decription of it's sound, and a couple of pics to illustrate it......

The Vibra-Slap makes its sound when the ball end is struck against the palm of the hand. This sound can be varied simply by rotating the sound chamber. It is available in three styles, two made from wood and a third made from metal. The wood versions have warm crisp tones while the metal version produces a metallic clatter with longer sustain.

Hello Onile and Charangaman!

I own Vibra slap from LP, Model LP 209. I had an option to choose from those three models and I liked the 209 model. I usually use it as a sound effect, but was amazed by this instrument the way Bob Marleys percussionist used it on the ''Misty Morning''.

Use it the way Onile said, hit the ball and if you want to have control over the sustain, just press the metal together (more squize, shorter sustainnnnnN

)

My 2 cents...

Onile: the teens are fine, actually, we are having great time. We are renovating some old house and I hope we'll have the finances good, so that we could stay in... I'll let you know in a private post...

I also have LP's version of the vibraslap - very fun to use!

You can hear this instrument in a lot of classic funk - think Grand Funk, Parliament, George Clinton, etc..

Also ... the more recent band "Cake" uses it a whole bunch!!

It's all about the timing with this fun addition to the "toy table"

Salutations and much respect for this bro's, I have seen these devices before and was curious - now I must have one!

It would be impressive to have an authentic jawbone but obviously completley impracticle, I will investigate the vibraslap. I'm a sucker for these kind of effects.

I am also crazy about some wacky sound effects and different kind of buizzes, fuzzes...

Try to get (I couldn't get it here, but i'm getting it soon!) Vibra- Tone! Also fun to have and use!

Greeting,La Quijada,(Horse Quijada), was an archaic percussion iten which was used by Cuban Percussionists,as it was used by African/Tribes,it was replace not for moral question,(since we are still using the skin of animals for the headdrums),but for other percussion instruments like Guiro,Maraca,Bongos,Clave,etc.Dr. Zaragemca

A small technical tip.
To get the longest KRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
hold the vibraslap at the sharpest bend, as in the picture and let it swing on your forefinger after you have hit the ball with your hand. Holding it tight after the hit will damped the vibration.
Also use it very sparsely, as overuse will piss the band off.

Dr Z. Sure, we are all using animal parts but I was thinking that the sight of a full size Donkey's jaw complete with teeth may just upset the animal rights people.. :;):

Hey Diceman, I have the LP metal model, but find I get the longest sustain by holding the thing at the right angle part of the body. This also allows for swifter multiple hits to really piss off the band.

I tried your technique, but couldn't quite get the same results.
