Any recommendations as to the best manufacturer to buy from? What size is standard - 12"?

Hi Simon B, hope all is well! Check out "Contemporanea" pandeiros, the best!!! Both 10" and 12" are the more common sizes, although 12" pandeiros tend to be a little heavy for the beginner. Contemporanea offers both wood (choro) and formica models (more popular on the Escolas de Samba). Pandeiro soloists like Marco Suzano, Airto Moreira, Guello, Paulihno Silva, among others tend to prefer the lighter 10" wood "Choro" pandeiros. Check the Contemporanea line at:

It depends on what music you're playing. If
I'm playing samba I'll propably pick up my 12" and if I'm playing chorinhos or something nice and soft I'll take 10" or 11" with a leather head. Contemporanea's are OK. I have 3 of them and they all are good enough.

if you ever get a chance to go to brasil look up Mestre Lua Rasta from Bahia, he lives in Pelorinho Salvador, makes some of the best atabaques and pandeiros iv ever played...nice guy as well.. :cool:

You can buy hand made pandeiros here.

If a hand crafted instrument is above your price range, I highly recomend this company. I have a 10" Bauer pandeiro and it is a lovely instrument.
