Hi Congaforum, hope all is well! With all due respect, to the masters and preservers of the Puertorican musical form known as Plena. Here I do include an introductory article about this musical genre. Hope you guys like it!

Aren't Panderos such an appropiate symbol of the diversity of Boricua culture: Moorish imstruments brought to the Carribean by the Spanish and used to interpret African derived rythms by ex-slaves along with English speaking immigrants form the Lesser Antilles...

Last saturday November 22 of 2003, Puerto Rico and the music world in general, lost another treasure of the Plena tradition. One of the best pandero player ever, Mr. Marcial "Chai" Reyes. Many people doesn't know, but he was the creator of the pattern the segundo pandero normally plays these days in the Plena ensemble, the "Banao". A true plenero in all the sense of the word, and the preserver of many almost extinct requinto pandero soloing techniques such as; "Punta de Clavo", "El tableteo", "Lento y Corrido", among others.

Que descanse en paz!

Al cielo se fué Marcial
repicando su pandero
repicalo fuerte "Chai"
gran maestro de pleneros.
