I think when I first saw the bongo on Ebay the other day the buy now price
was around $500 - $600 this morning the buy now priced had jumped to
$925 plus $85 for shipping and handling.

Me too, I saw it at $500. I wonder what my Valje Jack Costanzo 1957 is worth?

I have the exact same model, I bought it 4 years ago on craigslist for $150.

Looks like another Canuck, postage listed through Canada Post... Fella's, please stop makin' us look bad with the overpriced Valje gear

"Original" bongo skins from the 70s? Sounds more like a liability than an asset, I have never heard of a bongo macho skin lasting that long without splitting when tuned up to a normal pitch. Looking at how much the macho skin has been pulled down over the years, I would bet it will have to be replaced pretty soon if the buyer actually wants to tune it up and play it.

This bongos are getting expensive.

a person that wanted $3000 for his
bongo on the grounds that this
bongo was the 1st bongo JCR ever made.

Now we have another person that wants
about $1000 for his bongo on the grounds
that Valje Drums from this era have become
highly prized collector's items for pros and
collectors alike.

That's about $4000 for (2) bongos. Gold
prices do not have anything on bongo
prices.

I don't think the bongos with the $3K asking price sold for that price, I don't think these will sell for $950 either. This is financial desperation combined with greed, people unwilling or unable to work a productive job for a decent salary, wanting to make huge amounts of money fast for minimal effort. Unfortunately as the failing greed-driven economic system we have makes productive work for a decent salary harder to find, more and more people will choose or be forced to turn to despicable activities like this to make money.

A symptom of materialism in general where objects are no longer useful items to be used to actually do something. They become totems to be collected and the only answer is to have more of them.

Over the years I've seen different things become collectibles and priced out of reach of the people who would actually use them. And people wonder why I can't stand watching Antiques Roadshow.

The truth is there are very few bongo collectors in the world and not many pros around nowadays that play Valje or know much about them.

I sent the guy photos of my 2 Valje bongos: The 1957 Jack Costanzo model and the 1960 Valje concert bongo that I bought from Dandy and I asked him to price them. His response: "Nice bongos".
