Cajon Kit

Postby KidCuba » Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:29 pm

Found this on my local Craiglist and thought it was interesting. Might be a good product for those of you, including me, who do not have the tools to build a bass cajon.

A good deal for those with very few tools. Just some glue and a screwdriver needed. I guess I was able to build 2 cajons for about $20 in materials (wood and screws), but then I already had the glue and tools.

Bongo, what are the tools you use to build your cajones?

I am limited to a mitter box and saw, electric drill, and jigsaw. I do have levels, measuring tapes, etc... Just no table saws, clamps, etc...

Jig saw for cutting wood, drill for screws, sandpaper.....and that's it. Add some glue and some screws plus whatever finish you want, and you're playing rumba on a cajon! You can get dimensions on my blog.

Did you use regular old plywood from Home Depot, or some other variety on the two cajons you feature over on your blog.

I still have an unfinished conga restoration, a bunch of bamboo for katas, and now I'm thinking about cajones? I really need to focus...

One project at a time, but there are always a few lying around waiting for the inspiration to finish them.

I also tend to give a lot of finish projects away or sell them to fund the next one.

Regular old plywood, beach or birch, can't remember.

They offer to custom modify this construction kit. For a bass cajon (without any snare mechanics etc.) I would prefer more volume. And with 1/2" plywood it should be possible to bridge a width of more than 12" without static problems (f. e. 15" or 16"). For the back side a thickness of 1/4" would be enough and give an additional sound option.
