So what heads are popular with the Tito Puente timbales?

Ok here we dive into the can of worms haha,

Generally most people are going to say Remo ambassadors and a diplomat on the macho. The ambassadors are a good medium weight guage that every has loved ever since Remo started pumping them out. I have Remo Renaissance Ambassadors on my new 13 14 brass Tito Puente LP's and do not like them however. I find that they mute the drums way too much. I should have gone with Remo weathering ambassadors smooth white. Some timbaleros prefer clear heads which pump out the volume, but have lots of over ring that come with that. Remo Emperors should generally be avoided because they are too thick. For the legit sound calfskin is king, but they are expensive and do require some more maintinance. I personally have just acquired a set of 14 15 Brass Lp Palisades Park timbales and will be putting kangaroo skin on them.

Hope this helps,
