Mario "Papaito"  Munoz Salazar - Timbalito recordings of him?

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

Hi, can anyone tell me where I can find recordings of Papaito soloing on timbalitos? I have heard one on the green LP album with Potato on the cover from the early 80s and I've heard one that he did over a guaguanco rhythm. I know that there are others and if anyone knows of any of them, what album or the name of a song where he is soloing, please let me know.

Thank you, Clifford :)

not that i can think of soloing, but he does play timbal, on a cut, "Los Jovenes del Ritmo", on Cachao's "DOS" album. He plays paila on that cut, and percussion and voice on others. Too bad he aint here no more....

Hi ...I remember seeing "Papaito" in the early 70's with Johnny Pacheco's conjunto, so I know he recorded with Johnny also. there isn't too much of him soloing though he played "timbalitos", like bongos, or kinda "changui" style almost, he also used very thick drum sticks, never timbale sticks, when I saw him play. Yes he's on those early Patato LP recordings, you can also see his photo on the LP site. "JC" Johnny Conga.... :;):

Hi,

there is an 18-bar solo on "Vallan Vallende" with Sonora Matancera and Celia Cruz. I even transcribed it many years ago, although the issue in this solo is finesse in timing, which requires careful listening more than reading.

Hola Cuco,

I have exactly the same recording of "Vallan Vallende".

It is true that the solo is in all probability not played by Papaíto, as you said. Sorry for the misinformation. When I first got the record until the moment when I transcribed it, I was not aware of the timbalito dynasty with Sonora Matancera. Furthermore, the solo does not sound like timbalitos to me but rather like bongos played with sticks, at least on that recording.
According to the Díaz Ayala discography, the number was recorded in 1956. The timbalito chair at that time was helt either by Domingo Esquijarrosa "Minino", according to Díaz Ayala, or by José Rosario Chávez "Manteca", according to an internet source at http://www.buenamusica.com/la-sonora-ma ... /biografia. The latter source confirms your information. Minino is said to have been replaced by Mario Muñoz "Papaíto" in 1960.

Thanks for your correction.

I could have sworn Papaito recorded as well with Pacheco and might be on a Pacheco produced album with Celia that he is on.. I remember the Caborejeno very well..Pacheco was always there...that may have been where i saw Papaito with him...i could be wrong it was another century ago...also as I mentioned he is on the LP albums by Martin Cohen...from the early 70's...
