The roles of the bongo to provide percussion accents to the melody in a way that keeps clave, and to hold the downbeats on the bell, have been taken over by the conga player and set drummer in many if not most timba bands. Some small timba bands like Pedrito Martinez Group have a bongocero instead of a drummer. Others like Manolito y su Trabuco have both a bongocero and a drummer.

Always exceptions to the rules of course. I just happened to notice that they aren't very prevalent.
