Help - which series of LP conga is this one??

Postby scavard » Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:00 pm

Hi there, I'm new here.
My friend has this old LP conga (at least 10 years) and wants to sell it to me for 150euros so I'm trying to find out which series it is..
He also has LP Galaxy conga and the shape of this quinto is very similar to the galaxy's.
It sounds bad because it still has its original skin and it can't be tuned properly, but I'm going to buy a new head, either synthetic or skin..
The sticker/label inside says "LP265A replacement head for LP222, 522"
Does this skin sound good? I've been playing LP compact quinto conga for some time now, and I've decided to go for a conga with shell because I miss bass sound and the feeling of playing a real skin and wood..
So please, if anyone knows something about this series, tell me before I buy it.
Thank you for all posts and comments :)

That's a late 90's LP Classic Quinto with an after market paint job on it.

Hope this helps!!!

What a quick response!
Is that good or what? Because I'm pretty much amateur in these things...
Is it worth the money?
I knew about the repainting, but my concern is if it affected the overall sound because it wasn't made professionally...

No, it should a fine LP conga, no problems soundwise with the painting.
If you want it, go for it!

Hi folks, I didn't want to start a new thread and as it concerns this conga, I will just put it here..

I've been playing this conga only a few times a month throughout the years and just now I've noticed some small cracks in the wood where the lugs are attached. This just concerns two of the five lugs and those two are neighbours. As I don't know anything about conga's maintenance, I would like to know if I should be worried and if there is something I could do about it.

I would like my conga to last forever so I try to treat it nice - I keep it in a transport bag in a dry and relatively warm place, I always loosen the head if I don't play for a while, and it has never fallen down or anything like that.

Thank you in advance for any comments :)

I made some more photos of the insides and I got really concerned if this is how a conga should look like..

Hello scarvard,
That's not a crack, no Stave damage. It's only a very slight opening between the staves at the point where the plate screw is placed, and because a hole is there, the seem was encouraged to slightly separate; maybe during the new paint job.
Not really much to be concerned about, especially given that you tune and play it so seldom.
However, if it bothers you you can simply press some wood glue in the opening for good measure.
Good Vibrations,
Mr. Blavonski

Thank you!

I got an offer to get a second one from this original pair. It's a 12'' with synthetic evans head (I would also get the matching 11" synthetic head and a super heavy classic stand for both congas). I already checked the conga out and there are no cracks :) but it has the same paint job. Also its synthetic head is actually 11"3/4 but it fits somehow..

Did LP use to make congas in pairs of 11" and 12"?

So what do you think? Without any serious cracks and with synthetic heads, this pair might last forever, right?
