Thanks anyway. I did some further research on the geometry of rhythm book: it seems geared toward music theory and musicology with quite some math. So maybe not essential reading for a budding bongocero ..

I have Ned Sublette's Cuba and its Music and it is an excellent, well researched and documented overview of the history of the development of Cuban music. He is extraordinarily knowledgeable about Cuban music, writes well, has produced many outstanding Afrocuban records over the past 30 years, and leads music tours of Cuba that include the best music groups and musicians in Cuba. Highly recommended.

I don't have the Salsa Guidebook by Rebecca Mauleon, but she is an excellent pianist, both Salsa and Timba, and teaches well. That particular book seems to have been written in 1993 and she has developed a lot as a musician since 1993. Hopefully the listed later publication date of 2005 includes updates that reflect her growth during those 12 years. She also produced a book/CD of 101 montunos that is good, and her

The Geometry book is serious geometry written by a mathematician and computer scientist who was considered a founder of the field of computational geometry, so not very accessible if you don't have a strong math background.
