I still consider myself a novato on the Bongos. I've been teaching myself off youtube and other sites. I believe I got the martillo down pat and I've been able to use it with a few variations and fill-ins. I also have gone as far as using it for baladas,boleros etc. The remarkable thing about the bongos is like the "titere" like Arre calls it meaning you can use it however you want without going overboard and you always learn something new. Remember that the bongocero also comes in with the bell when needed and that is also fascinating when put together. I remember before I was interested in the bongos I would listen to salsa music and I would not hear the bongos being played but when I really got interested and would listen to the music I would hear the bongos and when I would not hear them is because the bell had come in. This instrument is awesome and if I was you I would give it a little more time. Am sure the bongoceros on this forum would agree with me and have plenty of more to say about it.

Try listening to Johnny "Dandy" Rodriguez, specially when he was with Ray Barretto, albums like "The Message" and "Cocinando". Also Tito Puente albums on the Concord label with "Dandy" on bongos. Also to learn proper martillo with "contratiempos" listen to Arsenio Rodriguez CD's featuring "Papa Kila", Cachao's "Descargas in Miniature" faeturing "Yeyito Iglesias" (the best). I just gave you a bongo' listening encyclopedia.
