I didn't want another bongo...

...but that is what I got!

I was really happy with my Resolution and Valje bongos, the last thing I needed was another bongo.

But last month an ad appeared in craigslist, Skin on Skin bongos, cherry $350. I thought that was cool to see a set of SOS for sale, but I passed it up.

Then a week or so later the price was down to $325, then after that $300. I still wasn't interested because I didn't need another bongo, even if it would match my SOS congas very nicely.

But yesterday the price was down to $275, and what can I say? I'm only human, the temptation was too much, so I drove and hour down to San Jose and bought them. I had to. If I didn't, well.....

Anyways, the date inside the drum says 9/08, which makes these drums roughly 16 months old. The seller said he just didn't play them anymore. They were tuned down when I showed up, and the nuts hardly have any marks on them, which kind of tells me they were barely used.

There isn't a mark on these drums anywhere. Stock skins and everything. So the way I'm looking at it is I basically got a brand new SOS bongo in cherry for $275 and an hours drive, versus the $400 and 3 month wait, plus shipping. Not that I don't want to support Jay and Josh....

I've already played it for an hour or so. The macho is a screamer and the hembra thunder! It is a very comfortable drum, nice and light. Totally stoked! :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Okay, here are the pictures.

Way to go BNB 1+1+1=3 Not too many. I initiated with 1 when started playing back again in 2005 ( I was away from playing since about 2000 ) then I added a second and so on, now the count is 7. One for every day of the week. Enjoy you new toy . Is the hardware painted on black or is it some treatment ? Did you already oiled the skins ? The hembra has the color of the Manteca.
The Valje is suppose to be out of the shop tomorrow, soon the lugs from Ralph would be order. By the way I have already some people interested on trading or buying.

Worth every penny. The way I look at it, something like that is worth picking up because you could easily get your money back if you need to sell. That's how I justify it lol.

Great score! Jay is a legendary pioneer in the making of percussion instruments, he is a national treasure and thanks God still with us and active. We no longer have Junior, but out of Junior and Jay came a young lion, keeper of the flame, Matthew Smith, only in his late 30's. Anything from these gentlemen is like a Picasso or a Van Gogh. They make Gonzalo Vergara from Cuba and Ismael Ramos from Puerto Rico (the founding fathers) very proud. You stole the show with them bongos, any seconds thoughts I'll buy them from you. Rompelo que ya esta pago!

It's OK. We understand. We would have done the same. The flesh is weak. "Deliver us NOT from temptation" Enjoy!!

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I guess 3 bongos is not too much, they are small. :D

I haven't done anything to this bongo, neither did the previous owner.. The skins came just like that. This bongo was made with Skin on Skins black hardware. It goes well with the color of the cherry wood and the dark streaks that wood has sometimes.

This bongo has been played so little, the skins don't even have any dirt or playing marks from them. I'm glad to have gotten it.

Caballo, good news on the Valje, it doesn't surprise me you are getting offers on it, they are collectable and rare. I see more Valje congas than Valje bongos. I've gotten offers on mine, but I'll never let it go. I think you might want to keep yours when it is done too.

I've now got bongos to match all my conga "sets". So I mean it now, NO MORE DRUMS!

No, it's not bleached, just a light colored skin.

Almost spooky, haunting, the very idea of getting hold of SUCH a set! Congrats!

Well,... Let us see which tests will be lying ahead of you in the future
Think of Psych1´s statement: "The flesh is weak. "Deliver us NOT from temptation"

Of course I, the great mismatcher ;-) am knocked sideways, watching that mouthwatering SOS beauty.

Surely, you have sets now that do not leave anything to wish for. Great grab, Geordie! :D

This drum came with one of those cheap bongo cases you see on ebay all the time, you know the 7.99 ones "DELUXE Padded BONGO GIG BAG". Not quite good enough. So in true bongos not bombs fashion I took my 50% off coupon to ACE hardware and bought myself a 22" Black and Decker tool box for $16.00 after the coupon discount. The bongo fits inside perfectly, and the combination of the tool box and the "deluxe" bongo case gives plenty of protection. Of course the tool box fits inside the bongo bike perfectly as well. This box works so well, I just might get another one.

Good thinking out of the box deal. That’s basically a perfect fit for that SOS bongo set and then the tool box fits perfectly in your bike basket. Is too bad that where I live now there is no local rumba or drum jam because I would take a page from your book and arrive on one of my touring bikes with bongo set on front basket, quinto in back rack, bells, guiros and claves in panniers. That’s what I am talking about

Brillian hardcase solution - as innovative as always, Geordie! :)
