I've been hearing a few good things on chivo being used on the macho but then again I heard it does not last long. I just bought a chivo skin for the hell of it and will mount on my macho (lol). I bought this on ebay GOAT SKIN HAND DRUM HEAD 18"CONGO BONGO ASHIKO DJEMBE. Will let you guys know how it turned out. It will also give me results on my mounting techniques that I got from youtube. Wish me luck.

I would echo what you have already heard, i tried goat on the macho a few times and really liked the sound for reggae, but they never lasted long, it couldn't take the tension. I tried with a relatively thick (for goat) skin too, it just doesn't seem to work with the bongo hardware (it tried to slip through) because it's used on other drums, nyahbinghi, djembe's etc and seems to be used at high tension but is mounted differently.

Goat is less durable than lets say kip due to the density of the hide. if you want something real thin let me know ive got .5mm thin mule that is from the very front of the animal.if treated kindly it will last you. and its cheap not goat cheap but i can sell you a nice round for 20 bucks.

How long does the chivo skin have to be in water before mounting?

Chivo will be ready in less than an hour sometimes. Because it's so thin, just keep an eye on it and once it's really malleable, you'll be able to mount it.
