"new" album by Mongo, Aguabella??

Postby konkoba98 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 6:14 pm

I just saw 'Perlas Cubanas, Fabulous Rhythms of Modesto' 2014 as a new release on Spotify, by Francisco Aguabella, Modesto Duran Orchestra, and Mongo Santamaria.

Anyone know anything about this one?

No it is not new by any means done around 1961 62...nuder the direction of Modesto Duran who brought the musicians together for this album...It to me is one of the best orchestrated Afro Cuban recordings of all time.IMHO...and I have been a collector of this music my whole life..this was remastered by Spotify so Im hearing like most of u will for the first time all over again .. I actually have this album in my collection for many years.. Modesto Mongo and Fransisco all played with the Kathrine Dunham Afro Caribbean dance co..as well as in Cuba.. others...Modesto is also on Mongo's classic folkloric album called YAMBU..recorded in 1957...with Fransisco as well...

short Bio :
One of the great conga players, Modesto Duran performed on many key recordings by top stars and orchestra leaders. His few records as a leader prove him to be very capable in that capacity, and it is a shame he was not "discovered" and recorded more. Hailing from the old section of Havana, he first started there with the Gilberto Valdes Orchestra. During 12 years in Mexico, he played with most other orchestras, including those of Esquivel, Luis Arcaraz, Armengol, and Marroquin. He travelled with Maria Antonietta Pons for seven years before becoming the backbone of the Perez Prado organization. Although Prado once claimed there was no real difference between the cha cha cha and mambo, it was Duran's three-count beat that gave mambo a unique identity and changed the face of Latin music. Moving with Prado to the U.S. in 1953, he worked with Sonny Burke, Don Swan and Russ Garcia, as well as singers Eartha Kitt, the DeCastros, Lena Horne, Herb Jeffries, and Harry Belafonte. That's Duran on Belafonte's famous, first Calypso album. A musician's musician, Duran had tremendous influence on other conga players and Latin aficionados, mainly by being on all the right albums at the right time.
first pic is Modesto on congas with Armando Peraza on bongos with Perez Prado and the second pic is Fransisco, Modesto, Mongo, and Carlos Vidal during the YAMBU recording-1957...
