Is there anyone out there who knows about a good teacher for tumbadoras in cuba?
I would like to take an 3-4 weks advanced course in Rumba & Folkloric styles (November 2003)

GOTO ChuckSilverman.com he takes groups to Cuba just to learn Rumba and other rhythms 4 times a year.....Buena Suerte....

Hey everyone, I'm making plans for a Cuba trip as well. I checked out Chuck Silverman's site as well, but the timing does work out quite right for me ( I need to go a bit later in November )

So, I thinking to arrange some lessons on my own. Currently, I'm thinking to be in Havana for 4 days and Santiago de Cuba for 3 days. Roughly, the dates that I am thinking is Nov. 16-23.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Although I will extract some info from Mike Spiro during my next lesson, I was wondering if anyone else had any advice.

I am trying to visit cuba next winter for some good music course.I found that probably You had done it last Year.
Meaby can You propose me any good shool of cuban music?I am living in poland so the way to cuba is long , and I will try to organise it well.
I will be enteresting to spend on cuba 3 to 4 weeks.
So pleas give me some suggestions if posible.

PS, The last time I did a workshop with christian, I was a kid and it was a samba class! But I know quite a few peeps who have worked for him [in fact, a few latimbala are doing brass for me at the moment] and if you like your rumba forms- well, hes DEEP into them. Let me know how it goes!

Also, highly recommended by is Andy Boothman. He runs weekly classes and trips to Cuba- you can check it out on http://www.musicaventura.co.uk. By all accounts a great percussionist and thoroughly nice fella!

By the way, Simon- you were right! There is a Manchester based drummer by the name of Billy Booth [ not to be confused with Andy]. In fact, I only recently found out I took over his job in a percussion troupe called Rapataka- I just never knew!

If you want to go to Cuba you can just go to any music school there and they will be glad to give you classes. That's what I did. It helps a lot if you speak Spanish but I found quite a number of people who speak English or German, too. Find someone who speaks a foreign language AND is a great teacher might be a bit more difficult, but musicians know each other well there and they will be able to tell you where to find someone. I would guess prices are much better if you negotiate with the Cubans rather than western organizers.
