Hello:

Just discovered this board!!! I recently dug my late fathers old conga drums and vintage LP's out from storage. This has really sparked my interest in learning to play like my father did. We had Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and Cal Tjader playing in my house 24/7.

I just recently started playing (JAN 2004) I acquired a number of tapes and I have to say that the Kalani Tapes "All About Congas" and "Show me the rhythms for conga" are really good.
They are easy to follow and teach a great deal.

Hi Dennis,
Birger Sulsbrucks "Latin American Percussion" book and tape combo is a pretty good place to start- it covers a lot of instrumentation and arrangements and is easy to read. Its quite old now and some sections seem dated, but its still got a wealth of stuff for people getting into the field.
As far as videos go, Giovanni Hidalgos "mano a mano" is excellent for rudiments, while "in the tradition" and "conga virtuoso" cover a wealth of rhythms and ideas for soloing- just dont get put off by what the man does with his hands!!
