Rejuvenation treatment for my Giovannis

Postby Chtimulato » Sat Mar 07, 2020 1:14 pm

Here they are, at last.
Traditional crowns, swedish bull skins, heatgun - the varnish is in fact a kind of plastic, which chipped away with the heatgun - 4 sandings (120, 180, 280 and 500), 10 coats shellac on the tumbadora, 20 (yes, 20 !) on the tres dos. And this is it.

Jeez Chtimulato! They look amazing brotha! The skins look killer, the shells are beautiful and the traditional rims just belong on there. One of a kind LP Gios. That’s great work. How long did they take you to complete overall?

Thanks.
It took about one week each (my 2 weeks winter holidays).
For each drum, one hour, one hour and a half stripping, and the same for sanding.
Then, though shellac mostly dries relativeley quickly, I had to wait a little because we have winter by now, so let's say one day per drum too.
And then, wrestling with the bull skins (it took me 4 hours for the tumbadora !), and 4 to 5 days drying.
I could perhaps have done the preparing (stripping, sanding and "shellacking") quicker, but I had a lot of things to do at the same time.

Wow Chtimulato! Very nice work. Gives me hope for my Gios one day. I was impressed with your subsequent standings. 500 grit!! The shellac looks great. Certainly yours now look way better than new. And importantly, I am certain, sound way better with the new skins. I was looking closely and found myself thinking...man he must have been wrestling those. Congratulations and enjoy.

As we say in French, you just need to roll up your sleeves...

It's not really difficult, it was more a pleasure.
