Just wanted to make sure everyone here new about Luis Vega and the amazing drums he is making in Orlando Florida at his company, VGA Drums and Percussion.
Luis has recently changed the shape of his drums for 2014. I love the fat belly, tapered bottom and smaller opening on the bottom. Very sexy!

How has changing the shape of the drum effected it's tone?

The shape is similar to Wood & Skin congas made in Switzerland.



But this company does not exist anymore as I know.

I have a beautiful Vega Mega Tumba just like what is in the pictures above, for sale or trade.

Luis Vega's drums are beautiful.

Those Swiss drums.. uh uh... hideous.

But everyone has their own tastes and others might like them.

I found some more pics in the www. The tumba has really an extreme proportion. It seems that the bottom apertures of both drums have the same diameter.

The 14" Vega tumba has got a fairly wide belly as well though.
But it is more the Valje-style shape, which I like.

It is not the belly itself. It is the extreme contraction underneath the belly. The shape is different from what we are used to like. But maybe this shape makes a definable effect on the sound. The air inside a drum has to produce some pressure in order to give a tone substance and body. It is always a question of relationship between volume and beating power. Optical hamonies between different drum sizes do not correspond automatically with a harmony between sound characters. Maybe the guys from Wood & Skin had developed special formulas (volume : form) which led to this shaping principle.

but holding such a big drum between
your legs must be a haunting experience

Maybe they sound great [The Wood and Skins] ... but they look like a half blown up condom.

I think the Wood Skin Drums are very unique and would like to hear how they sound....
The big belly and small bottom should have some nice base tones...
I don't think anyone would hold the Tumba between their legs.
