My Meinl’s

Postby godskin » Mon Jun 03, 2013 8:49 am

Hi there, I thought I would share with you the meinl conga’s that I have.
They are all in their older years and maybe all build in Germany.
I have found them on the net and they are all second hand.

First there is this Requinto (10”) from the “live sound” series (West Germany).
I got it with a stand and a army duffelbag for € 70 that’s about $ 90.

This requinto has no cracks that I could find and the rim is in perfekt condition.
But when I did a closer inspection on the inside I found a kind of crack on one of the staves.
It seems it might only be on the surface and there is absolutely no damage on the outside.
Does anyone have any ideas how this could have happened ?

I have not played it much but I find it is a bit ringy, besdies that its quite fine.
There a skin I got from brazil, its a "boi" skin, thats ox its about 2 mm and later I will reskin it with that.

Has anyone here ever had a live sound requinto ?
Opinions & comments are welcome.

That looks like it's been there for a long time and is probably stable. Good idea to keep and eye on it anyway. It looks like a surface imperfection that doesn't go that deep and may have been there when it was built. How it happened? It's wood and wood does that :D

I am not sure, but maybe the wood of the layers "worked" , i.e. moved into opposite directions?
Anyway, one thing is for sure: That should not be a problem at all, I would say the stability
of the shell is not endangered.
BTW nice drum with an idiosyncratic shape.

Glad to hear this inside "crack" is nothing to worry about.

idiosyncratic !! I had to look that up and I like the word, its a idiosyncratic word to use :D

The requinto now has the ox skin I got from Brazil.
Its was funny when I was looking for a skin in sao paulo.
There was one street with 4 percussion shops. I was there with a Brazilian friend who translated my wishes.
All the skins they showed where very thin and I kept asking for thicker skins. The sales people did not understand why I wanted a thicker skin.
Most of skins they sell are used for atabaques and are played in the typical Afro Brazilian style, open tones and slaps only.
The thin skins might make this easier but thats not what I wanted.
In the last shop I finally got a ox skin with a thickness of 2mm +
It was a very cheap and good investment

Next 2 floatunes from the live sound series (quinto conga)
The seller got then from a conservatorium but had no use for them because the group he played in preferred the sound of djembe.
I went to his place played a little and bought them for a reasonable price

They have West Germany on the tag but I cant say if its rubberwood or a different wood.
How to know ? I read most of the topics about old meinl's and everybody seems to agree, there not much documentation about them and therefore we don't know much for sure

The conga’s diddent have rubber strips on the tubs like the floa in this topic.

Is it normal for floa's to have rubber under the iron ??

They came with waterbuffalo skins and one of them was tuned uneven.

These are my first conga's I bought about 3 months ago.
Yes they have dents but structurally they are in great condition and I am happy to get into the groove with them.
I can already feel what playing conga is doing with me.
Its a physical, mental and emotional process that gives me the opportunity to become stronger in all these layers as long as I am willing to surrender to the rhythm.

All the best to all of you, godskin

A friend has a set of Floatunes. My goodness they weighed a ton. They did have a very strong and clear fundamental tone. The hardware seemed to actually make a difference.

Sure they are quite heavy but you have to consider some of the weight is in the is in the extra hardware.
I recently reskinned them with some mule from greece. I like the sound but still the mule needs to break a bit more.

No other old meinl floatunes player around here ?

No Floatunes, but do play Meinl Pros. Does that count, still in the Meinl house.

Well, Meinl has a reputation for sturdiness, and weight is surely one of the consequences
one has to bear (or rather carry)...
Be that as it may, the Meinl Woodcrafts I own weigh quite a lot, as their hardware is
superstrong and heavy, let alone the oak shells. Made to last!
