I’ve had one pop like that as well, the drum I’m working on right now had one missing band and two popped ones but I’m pretty sure this drum was dropped. Had one large crack and several small ones but the head, which was original showed no signs of use at all. The scrubber that scratched the aluminum is a 3m product intended to use in place of steel wool for use in stripping wood.

It probably has particles of a hard abrasive like aluminum oxide or silicon carbide on the plastic surface.
