Holes on congas shell

Postby congalou » Wed Feb 20, 2013 8:12 pm

Hey !

Here is an project I have since a long time, I have never see holes on congas as we have on snare, tom or bass drums..

Have you ever seen that ?

I have try on my last congas.. seems interesting, kind of "little open bottom congas" effect. I don't have a lot of time this week, I will test that better next week.

Maybe the holes have to be on the bottom, more holes, not just one..

I will see, but the concept seems good.

What are you trying to accomplish with these holes in your congas?

If you're playing seated I expect the holes would go a long way to increasing the sustain and overall volume of the drum by increasing air movement. Holes in kit drums occur because without them the drum is a sealed unit and sounds very flat.

I'm not so sure it would help if the drum is in a stand, or if I'd want holes in my center drum. I play with the pitch a bit by changing the size of the opening at the bottom when playing seated. I think holes would limit the effect this has.

I understand that the holes on a set of drums is to let the air in and out on a double headed drum. I dont know what function the holes will play on a conga drum. Interesting though. I often wondered what the drum set tone controls would sound like on congas. Has anyone tried this?

When a conga is played flat on the floor, like when you play seated, it creates a "sealed unit" in a similar manner as a kit drum. Putting a hole in a tone drum that you play flat on the floor should increase the bass response and sustain.

So, the result :

Little bit more sustain, the skin is free.
More bass
The tone is more hight pitched

Same stuff that when you let a little space between the floor and the shell.

Rythme, you're right, no effect when you incline the drum, so, not very interesting for the conga, but for the tumba wich stay on the floor, it's interesting.

here it is !!

I don't know. If I had to make a hole on a bata, I should try in the middle. But it's hazardous, kind of risk...

The way I work : follow your instinct !! If it work, it's cool, if it don't, it's sad, but at least, you know !!!
