Well originally Volcanoes were less than this price, I'm guessing Johnny's friend is banking on the Volcano congas being collectible seeing as how they are not being made anymore. They are very well made and beautiful drums....but that is a very very high price. I guess that is what they are worth to the owner. I know have drums that I value a lot more than what I paid for them.

I have 3 Matthew Smith Ritmo (which I adore) had 4 Skin on Skin for over 30 years as well as 5 Spirit In The Wood solid shell congas and I just ordered Manito's drums. I love them all equally! But..I lean towards the solid shell drums for overall sound. I can use them in any playing situation, bands, folkloric, etc. I mostly play in Jazz, Latin and with other drummers. I have my SITW in and out of taxis in padded soft cases and in hardshell cases on the planes all the time and they are amazingly durable. No signs of ware and tear! Another thing is that they are much lighter then my other stave drums. I also have Toca Custom Deluxe conga drums that get nicked up all the time for some reason. Not a bad drum with the right heads on them if you do not mind carrying the extra weight (super heavy drums). For me, it's probably a matter of personal taste at this level.
