My New Moperc Super Tumba

Postby BMac » Tue Nov 01, 2011 3:04 am

I've uploaded a few photographs of my new Moperc Salsa Club Series Super-Tumba. I received it just last week. I absolutely love this drum. I wanted the bigger tumba, at about 13 1/4 diameter bearing edge to edge, to have tonal room under any conga player I meet. This drum is going to grant me that room. This thing is the biggest beast in the jungle. It's my third Moperc and all three drums are very consistent in quality. It's hard for me to compare these instruments to the work of other craft makers because the music stores only stock the mass-produced drums, so I don't want to get into a debate about which craft maker is the best. But I can say I love my Mopercs. Their sound is just so beautiful. Their tones make the mass-produced drums I've played sound like dead thuds. But this third drum, my super-tumba ... it just beats all. I didn't expect such a big drum to have a crisp slap, but it does. I expected a commanding low tone, and it definitely has that. I'm very surprised at its range into higher tones at higher tension. It can play low, it can play higher into middle conga range. It can purr and it can growl. Y'all may have picked up from my other posts that I'm a skin perfectionist, well this drum came with a perfect skin perfectly mounted. I love the contrasting striped and matched ash staves. That contrast will mellow in a few years and move toward a more yellow patina ... if my quinto is any guide to how the coloration will change with time. I'm not a professional grade musician. I'm just a hobbyist. But I think I'm qualified to share my thoughts on Moperc congas ... they're amazing. I first looked into finer congas when I felt my old Matadors were holding me back. That's no disrespect to old Matadors. I still have a 20 year old Matador tumba that is a wonderful instrument. But I chose right in upgrading to Mopercs. Every time I play a Moperc I feel like I could play it for a lifetime and never feel like the instrument is holding me back. They make me want to be a better player.

It almost seems superfluous to post pictures because the quality of Moperc drums seems so consistent and there are pictures already on the website (www.moperc.com). What you see is what I've gotten on all three drums. No flaws, just perfection. But I've posted some here of my drum anyway, like a proud new father.

Cheers!
BMac

Congrats, BMac, that looks like an awesome beast indeed.
It can purr and it can growl.
I can concur, my Delaporte Supertumba
with exactly the same measurements like your Moperc Big Mama does the same wonders to.
BTW the mule skin on mine is as thick as you would think, just 4mm. What about yours?
Peace & drum

Congrats BMac. That drum looks great and am sure it sounds as good as it looks.
One thing is for sure, no matter what ANYBODY says, there is NOTHING like owning a good quality hand made drum, NOTHING!
Every time I pull out and play my SOS congas I have great satisfaction because I have quality, sound and tradition behind them. I have no doubt that you and every one else who owns a good hand made instrument feels the same way.
Once again, congratulations.

Gotta tell you bmac, I've played (and owned)them all pretty much except for juniors, for my money for a modern sound, something you can use for latin jazz, rumba, pop, salsa, mopercs are the best. They really have a tone that is so versatile, fat with projection, dry slaps with biting open slaps. really a tremendous drum and well made to boot! there may be other drums that are better for just one thing ( folcloric for exampele) but for a drum that does it all I don't think you can find a better one made.

Conga-tulations. 8) Looks great. Moperc seem to make some top quality equipment. If the Moperc congas, bongo and timbal I played in Cuba are anything to go by, Im sure these sound great also.
As for it being the biggest beast in the jungle, there are bigger Super Tumbas out there.
Nonetheless, that is one hell of a drum!!!! Id be more than proud to own a set!
Congrats again man, love the styling of those drums, the version Mike (congamyk) had made though take the cake. Conga porn that is.

I'd say the skin is about 3mm or so along the free edge. It's hard to guess the actual playing thickness. I've seen free edge skin puffing out to considerably greater thickness than the original flat dry skin thickness and never shrinking back down upon drying. I suppose one could cut the playing skin and measure directly ... but we're not going to do that. But I would characterize this skin as thick. I think that's quite appropriate on a big drum like this. I'm wanting low tone. Also, I suspect getting a crisp slap on a big drum may benefit from a thick skin ... this is all just theory. I know I love the way this drum sounds and plays, and pretty looks to go with it all. Glad y'all like the photos.

Did somebody call this a mama-tumba? ... oh no! ... this is the big papa-tumba. I'm saving up to get the mama-tumba to keep him company!

I'm not sure if I know which drums were Congamyk's that took the cake. If they were the three Moperc set with red stain and extra bands ... I'm feeling it too. Conga porn indeed. That is a pretty set ... I just forget who posted those. I saw those and thought it's just no good to lust for another player's drums so I let it go. I don't want to start my collection over to get the custom stain and bling, but no doubt, if we're talking about them red ones with the bands ... bling-pow!

Cheers!

Bmac congrats. That SuTumba looks positively wicked! Those crisp slaps you wrote of are more your hands than anything. You don't have to be humble with us bro

Uh ... yeah ... that's them. About those, I like those a lot. They're not mine. I got that. Not crossing any lines here. Keeping my hands to myself here, not trying to step in. Just admiring from afar. I got my own pretty drums to go home to. I hope somebody is hitting that, cause somebody needs to. Would be a damn waste if not ... right?

Nice large tumba, BMac. Mine is going to be sunrise color. I like Natural ash color, but I also like the added protection that a stain offers.

How weird is that? I haven't visited this website in months and I happen to check back in the day after someone posts on a thread I started years ago. Congrats on your order Ebongo. I've been thinking lately about filling out my collection with a tumba to have a set of four from quinto to super tumba. I have an 8 year old boy. We go camping and all kinds of stuff. I kinda stepped away from the drums for almost two years ... playing very infrequently. I feel it coming back around though. I moved into an apartment to save money but I can't play at home here ... but things are coming back around financially too. But my drums are in nice bags with the tension off the heads. They'll be fine when I'm ready for them again. Kinda joined a little band so I'm playing a little bit again. Life. Enjoy that new Moperc when you get it! I'm trying to get back to my drums.
