Percussion store near elevated Marcy Ave. station in Bklyn
Posted: Wed Jan 19, 2011 11:18 pmIs anyone familiar with the landscape of the Marcy Avnue J line trainstop in Brooklyn? My question is about a rather small gentleman who owned a percussion store near the Spanish Bakery @ the middle of the block between Havemeyer and Marcy Avenues? What was the gentleman's name and the name of his business? I had bought a set of LP Thunder Timbs from the Puente line at a very discounted price $200 back in 1992. He was going out of business at the time and had colorful stories of Joe Cuba jamming with many New York Latin musicians at his store throughout his tenure there. I would presume about 25 or so years. At the time of his liquidation sale he had many congas, Batas, bongoces and few Timbales to sell. It was a tremendous selling period. Being that his proximity was near Junior Tirado's turf it wouldn't surprise me if he had carried some of his instruments as well but I was not knowledgeable of the great drummaker artisans of that particular point in time. I still have the thunder timbs in beautiful condition but I'll need to replace the stand and cowbell/ jam block mounting hardware. Otherwise I have an excellent keepsake of what he used to sell. Just Curious, thank you for any reflections on this subject.
