Hello Congaplace,

Here are some very nicely painted Congas by Volcano Percussion called Volcano Candera. Being a gearhead I really like the life like flames.

Is that how much he sells his regular mango congas for? These have the nicer version of hardware too. He doesn't list prices on his website but for some reason I thought they were about twice that or more.

More than twice $800 for a conga?
I'm not familiar with that maker's prices, but $1600 per drum would be the highest price I have ever seen.
Jibaro, you may be right ... I don't know ... but I'm curious.
I thought you could buy any conga in the world for a $1000 or so (US dollars) ... setting aside particular items with some celebrity nostalgia or fame.
But considering just currently made new drums, are there higher prices than $1000/drum?

P.S.: Obviously this is just a curiosity for me ... I'm not on a quest to find the highest price drum in the world. When I look at the price of guitars and such though, I am somewhat thankful I fell into playing drums. Pro level hand drums are much cheaper than pro-level guitars ... and let's not even get into pianos ... or orchestral marimbas and such.

Tom will send a Volcano price list if you ask, but I hate asking when I know I'm not buying.

Tom does not sell any congas for 2 to $3,ooo ,take it from me and Gallichio....his drums cost yes..but your buying one of a kind drums...I am supremely happy with my Mangos..which i believe list around 700 a drum...same as the other drums made around the country today...hey LP Giovannis go for the same price new....Tom makes beautiful drums and they also sound GREAT!..."JC" Johnny Conga

I got a Volcano price list a while back, no big deal. His highest price for a drum back on '08 was $2,399, which was for his most premium top of the line model He has much more reasonably priced drums as well. It all depends on the wood used and the treatment they get; boomatched, etc.

Well this discussion is an eye opener for me. Tom, the Volcano maker, does mention 24K gold hardware in one of the communications shown on Conga Doctor's blog linked by Jibaro. So ... yeah ... it looks like you can spend several thousand U.S. dollars on a single conga. I didn't know that. I do differ somewhat with concerns expressed in the blog that such exotic and high-priced drums hurt the market. I don't think other makers are moving in such a direction, so these exotic Volcano's are at the fringe of the market (bear in mind that not even all Volcano drums are so high priced). I don't feel affected. I'm not interested in actually buying drums with real gold hardware anyway ... but it's interesting somebody is out there making such drums. So ... "Go Volcano!" as far as I'm concerned. I'm so content with my Mopercs that I just can't be chafed by prices and high-cost options available elsewhere. I've got my dream drums. Done. The rest is just interesting conga trivia.

Agreed. But this Caldera model appears to be an "entry level" Volcano, not one of the higher priced versions. I'm pleased to know Volcano has some reasonably priced models.

It's nothing new of course, but one thing I've noticed is a lot more wild graphics in the middle price ranges of congas. Meinl Marathon Designer series has eight different themes you can choose from, including palm trees, racing stripes, stars, leopard spots, etc.



Obviously intended for the non-purists, but lots of manufacturers (big and small) seem to think there's a market for these. And I do love palm trees.

Let's be fair here and step back and take a good look at the true essence of this thread!

How many of us here belong to, or have belonged to a car club at some point? or played on a sports team where we've had to buy our own equipment?
It's all about personal preference, if you've got the $ to buy the most expensive rims for your ride, and a bumping sound system, as well as 7" DVD, or larger, screens for your passengers....well then....you proceed in doing so. The same with sports equipment, if there are "fanatics" of a sport, hobby, or passion, then there will be someone who will create a flashier, ridiculously expensive product for you to purchase.

The mainstream players don't necessarily endorse the purchase of "Volcano" congas, possibly due to a sense of economic disparity and inflated pricing, but ultimately if you had the $ and could buy any drums you wanted........................?

We've all seen those vintage Cuban videos on Youtube and many of those players are producing wicked sounds from drums that you probably would send to either Matthew, Cali, or SOS for repair before playing them yourselves. I, for one, like the look of the wood that Tom uses for his drums, however I would never spend more than I could reasonably justify (again, this is a personal preference which differs in all of us) spending on a drum. My Matthew Smith set of 4 drums are in fact that last drums I will ever purchase, but to those of you who can afford Volcanos, or any other quality drum made today....do so with a clean conscience.
