thought i'd post a picture of my project today. I had refinished the congas i got from Omelenko in brown but i decided today that i would return them to a natural finish so here it is.

That's a nice look. But what are all those holes in the shell?

Lower holes are where the LP handle fits in. The 2 closest ones together are where the screws go in for the bracket to attach to the conga stand, the others are for the side plates.

Check out any standard LP Classic, Gio etc...


Lookin good bro. I pref the darker finish personally, but nothing wrong with a beautiful clean natural finish either.

No need to put the stand brackets back on.

V - You're going to fill in the stand plate holes - right?

If I were doing a make over like that, I would be filling them in, the trying to get the stain to cover the repair/fill in job.

On my LP's, I didnt want to do a make over on new drums by filling in the holes then going over it all or having it look tacky with different coloured fill, so rather than have the side plates for the stand, (I used the LP Collapsible cradle stands) I chose to leave the bolt in place with the nut fixed on the inside.. See below.

Vinnie...bro you move fast and its looking aw.....some , achieving the results that you want. As Abakua, I just leave the screws in. You will notice that they will look even fatter due to the light color, and you will be more noticeable on stage. Depending on the clear finish you put on it , with time they usually yellow a bit ...giving them a golden look.

thanks guys I take all the stand brackets off all my congas. I just put the screws back in like Abakua does and Olsongo.

here is the finished conga including a shot with the other 2 that i was trying to get close to. The old with the new not an exact match of course but it looks presentable and keeps things looking nice when playing all three congas.

Nice job Vinnie. Is the wood on this drum rubber wood, aka Thai oak? because if it is Ill reconsider a conga makeover for my recently acquired classic CP's

You did a relly nice job, did you refinished the tumba as well? What's up with Miguel Cruz and the timbales?
I spoke with him yesterday. We' re going to do a thing together next Saturday.
