Very interesting, the article mentions sound insulation as a feature of the hemp building material but does not say anything about sound projection for the conga. It seems like even as a composite that it would not be dense enough but I really don't know. Either way it is an interesting use of hemp

People used to say it about plastic, now I say "Is there nothing Hemp can't do..."
Would be interested in hearing the instruments live.

...and if everything else fails you can always roll it up in a joint
jokes aside, hemp is a wonderful material that has a thousand uses and was unfortunately penalized for years due to its proximity to cannabis indica.
it is resurrecting nowadays and this cannot be anything but a positive thing.

Hemp is a fantastic material. I've seen many examples of what it can be used for, all quite different from the soft, fibrous material we normally think of. I wouldn't be surprised by anything it can do anymore.
I use hemp rope for making drums. Of the natural materials, it stretches the least. In fact, even of the synthetic materials, hemp stretches the least of all but kevlar-core static line. It's about equal to polyester without the kevlar. It ties like cotton and doesn't wear very much.
How is this related to the sound of a conga? It's magical, folks. A terrible shame it has not been used industrially for all these years (since 1937 in the US).

Ja Ja, I guess rubbing your hands on the hemp shell may get you high during a gig. That way you save money not having to buy drinks.

Or you can wait and have them set fire to the congas at your funeral

The suppression of hemp as a useful raw material in the U.S. had more to do with Hearst and the paper and forest industries protecting their assets than it's family link to marijuana. It's relationship to the pot plant was more of a handy enabler for the realization of their greedy schemes.
Just a brief soap box interlude, we shall now return to our regular programming.... hey, nice congas dude !....
