I came across this drum at ebay, and I wonder if it is really LP (although the badge says so):

If so, then it appears to be quite old, doesn´t it?
I don´t know if it´s fiberglass or wood.

Any ideas? ???

it looks to be an LP by the crown, shape and bottom metal rim. the side plates are something i have not seen before. fibergalss for sure wth a seem in the middle where a metal rim once covered it. ask about an alma, as most of the old palasades park models had one.

Doesn't look like an lp at all to me. the sticker is just a common LP sticker.

Hi Mike---It's not LP. The hardware looks abused and pieces are missing (lug nuts, washers) at least 1 tuning rod is missing. Pretty beat up.
Just my observation.

Exactly, why bother? That is a Lp crown, possibly the shell thats been repainted or something. But the bearing edge has a good dent in it.
oh yeah thats a common LP sticker, I have one on my bongo case.

I think this is an LP drum. My earliest LP catalog ( 1967 ) shows the side plates exactly like these in the photo. The rim is also LP. The sticker is a newer sticker. This drum is in poor shape but can be fixed up if you have the time and money. One of the side plates is upside down. I would think it is fiberglass. From what I can see you would need a new head, new lugs, but it could be worth some money just like it is because it is a very early LP conga to a collector.

The body and the crown looks LP, I've never seen those side plates. I've seen LP congas as far back as 1968 and never seen those side plates. Here in Miami, in the mid 70's, Luis Gutierrez (El Chino) manufactured congas with the body identical to LPs, however, the side plates were a bit different. These congas were named "Latin Sound".

The sticker of the one in the photo is a more recent LP sicker, that could be obtained at a music shop.

I have sent Martin Cohen all my old catalogs in pfd and he said he would post them on Congahead.com. I don't know if he has done this yet. The one I have from 1967 Mr. Cohen said he forgot about. I might have the first catalog ever from Latin Percussion. Does anyone have one earler than 1967?

I have one from 1971. I sent Cohen a scanned copy through the Latinjazz forum, of which I'm a member, and he never even thank me. I also sent him a photo of a 1964 LP bongo' that I bought from the original owner, Juan Mendez, Johnny Pacheco's bongocero and again, not even a thank you.

That 1964 bongo' can be seen under our "bongos" category.

Here is that 1964 LP bongo that belonged to Juan Mendez,I had it for about 30 yrs. and traded Julito in our forum for a Venezuelan Pan Con Queso.

Cohen knew I had it and I sent him a photo, per his request. He never thank me. It was one of the first 10 made. The macho was 7.25" and as per Jose Magual (Buyu), he told Cohen to reduce it to 7". The LP label reads "Maywood, N.J.",which happened to be Cohen's house at the time and he made them in the basement. That bongo, which I kept in pristine condition, is very light weight.
