Hello guys!

Conguero friend called me yesterday saying that he can get cheap and 'good' cow skins from Venezuela. Any one familiar with cow skins qualities on tumbadoras?

Thank you very much for reply!

Hi there

you need to get in touch with Congalou in this forum.

I purchased a set of skins from him and I never had a better sound..

Hey Gurupimpi, I went to Venezuela for Christmas and while I was there I bought some Venezuelan skins. They were great quality and cheap. I came home and mounted them and they sound great! The skins that I bought are used for gaita drums so it is a big skin but you trim it down and it works it perfectly. I think I paid about $5 per skin and they were worth so much more than that and really sound good. They are thick skins and so they don't have the ring that thin stock heads have and I think they sound more classic/traditional. I am happy with the purchase and I think you would be as well.

Hi Gurupimpi

I've just changed an LP classic water buffalo head to mule - no comparison! The mule head is just so much louder, warmer and more 'traditional' sounding. However, the water buffalo head on my Tumba sounds cool - its a thick head and always sounder warmer then the conga head. I'd go for mule for your conga/quinto every time.

For congas look for thick skin, the thicker the better. Cow skin only gets so thick.
