Anyone had experience with redoing chrome on hardware? I have 5 side plates and a rim that I want to re-chrome for my Gon Bops. Wondering what something like that would cost?

Hi,
I have just re -chromed all the fittings on my Gon Bops. The cost in NZ dollars was $55. Make sure you ask the plating guy to polish each article after the stripping dip, especially if there is any obvious rust or pitting. I replaced all the bolts and nuts with a new hex button style bolt, and when chromed they became brittle and failed under tension. I am now getting the high tensile version in bright zinc, which looks almost as good as the chrome, and retains the strength.
cheers

ps, would you care to comment on my post Apr. 18 2007,11:55 "new skins for my Gon Bops"

I have re-chromed my Gon Bops and here in the NW United States it cost $230. Chrome plating places are getting scarce because of environmental regulations, so the prices are up.

Gon Bop is know for having poor chrome plating. I bought my drums new in '77 and always carried them in padded hard cases, but the chrome still started to pit and flake off.

I had them re-chromed at a place that specialized in triple chrome. They do primarily custom and antique cars, re-plating a lot of bumpers with very tough heavy, deeply shiny chrome, more beautiful than the original Gon Bop.

I had then do the crown, hooks, hook nuts, and plates. I replaced the plate nuts and bolts with chrome ones from a hardware store.

I am glad I spent the money, the drums look very good.
