I've read various places on this forum to put a thinner skin on a tumba with a thicker skin on quinto--AND vice versa!

Is this just personal preference, or is there really something to be gained from one method or the other. Which one?

Thinner skins has more interaction,(sound waves), between the skin and the shells facilitating to reach the tones,semi-tones and high pitches, all these of course in relation to the body of the shell the type of wood,or fiber, the thickness of the shells, the tuning,etc....but also too thin would make the skin more breakable,so you could n't go to the edge in that direction neither.Dr. Zaragemca
