Has anyone out there played on Fat Congas thick cow hide heads and if so what can you say about them. I am looking for some thick heads for my LP Millenium edition drums and am partial to the Gon Bops and Timba style heads. Anyone with insight on the fat conga skins or anything similar to the Gon Bops or Timba please chime in. Thanks.
I don't know about the Fat conga heads, but sure would like to check them out!!
OK GonBops used to use united rawhide I think, don't know for sure. But they had them bleached, that's why they were so white. But I have heard United Rawhide went out of business. Timba used to be Gon Bops is the consensous.
I heard that there is a new , or least found cowhide supplier in the US that has the best skin for congas etc... though I don't know who it is.
I never like those thick skins on those GonBops...I replaced them with LP Handpicks...what a different sound, see im slap happy ...That became my skins of choice
I have heard of JCR in the Bronx NY, but cannot get ahold of them. I did manage to get ahold of Fat congas and they carry heads of all thicknesses. Thanks for the replies.
Well, got ahold of JCR and talked to Cali the owner. Pretty cool guy. I have a set of three mounted heads coming from the bronx. I cannot wait to hit them.
Hey topfig1, would you happen to have the phone number of JCR. I'm thinking of changing the head of my conga. Do you have to bring the drums to him, or are they premounted? Also, can you tell me how the head sounds on your drums. Thanks.
The number to JCR is (718) 293-6589. The price for all three already mounted and ready to put on the drums is 175.00 shipped which is alot cheaper than the Timba mounted heads.
