Joaozinho...Sorry but all your playing is Tumbao..that is NOT Rumba Abierta, or Rumba Columbia, Rumba Matanzero,or Rumba Havana style ....you might want to take some lessons on rhythms..so u know the difference..I can help you if you want..we can hook up thru SKYPE...I dont' like people to be misinformed as to what and how they are playing...that will lead to a lot of confusion as to how to play what, where when and how...I have been playing for 48 years on the Conga drum I can help you or anyone else here that needs help on the drum...you younger guys are not really learning the rhythms the right way and some are making it up ...and putting their own 'titles' on rhythms...rhythms have already been established..and documented...now if you 'created' a New rhythm that is something else...but I can put a list up here of 100 Cuban rhythms, and I really wonder how many of you really know how to play them...and not from what u picked up on youtube...also remember please that because a guy can play the drum , DOES NOT make him a teacher....that takes years of learning to do and a recognized 'methodology' for teaching...which I have..any questions?...Thank you...

I dont deny that you have ears of experience in conga drums,i paid all the respect for such endurance and love in music.I'm not shure of this groove being rumba abierta,but I'm pretty shure that this is not a tumbao .I didnt ask if it was rumba columbia or guaguanco havanero or matancero,or yambu... that you supose that I dont know.I would like to see a video with your rumba abierta,is possible?

I'm not sure what the rhythm is, but I admire your stones for recording and posting it here. I think I saw another post of some solo work you recorded as well.

I've been working very hard on the congas for the last 7 years or so, after having a set for 15 years and not taking the technique seriously enough. I've yet to put up a recording or video for critique by the board. One day soon perhaps

I understand you,I'ts being very hard to me too,learning to play congas,I play alone ,most of the time,so for me is important to have other's opinion's,but that doenst mean that i dont have my own critical sense.The first thing that I did when i became a member of this forum was to watch the videos of other's member's,I remember that I was surprise to see such a few ones,I know their drums,but not their music (with some exceptions)Post your music!! What's wrong with that??

I think the challenge is the old skool way so many people were brought up to learn Rumba. I've read a lot of stories were intermediate players would get yelled at and run out of rumba gatherings and I find that old energy lingers on this board. I'm just not interested in getting shredded for not playing the way someone who grew up in Cuba and played their entire life does. By learning outside that context I've developed a style that's somewhat unique to me. It's funny, I went out to audition for a group a couple weeks ago and the piano player told me I was the second "white guy" he's ever met who could actually play the congas (of course he offered me the gig). Given that he played in a number of latin bands over in Vancouver for over 25 years, I took it as quite the compliment LOL

It does sound a lot like the cha cha version of tumbao being played on two drums to me, and as I played along to it, it matches cha cha/tumbao exactly. What is your source for this rhythm as rumba abierta? What are the parts for the other congas?

That might be one way to play cha cha, but not the traditional way I think. I would not say that way defines cha cha, I would call that video cha cha with a tumbao montuno. To me cha cha does not have the double tones played on and after the second strike of the clave on the 3 side. To me cha cha only has one tone there and it is right with the second strike of the clave on the 3 side. This tone on the second strike of the 3 side can be played on either drum, either on the high drum or the low drum. The low drum is typically not played on the 2 side, at least the way I was taught.

So to me your rumba abierta sounds like cha cha with the low drum played on both sides of the clave. Maybe it would be easier for everyone to hear it the way you hear it if we could hear the clave and it's relationship to what you are playing.

Hello Joaozinho I must retract what I said about what you were playing ..Yes!! it is a Rumba Abierta...after listening to it again ..what is throwing me off, is the 'swing' of how your playing it..you have to let it breath..the way it was done in the video you put up...I think you just might be rushing the movements a bit too close to one another...and Rumba Abierta is slower than Rumba Columbia ...

I see now, the melody of the open tones is the same as cha cha, but the manoteo is different, and the rumba abierto does not have the slap.
