				Nice rolls and riff's Johnny!!
Do you have the hand pattern for the rumba clave slaps on top of the double rolls example you provided?
That would sound rippin' mixed in to a solo piece once a person got it up to speed!

Here is an 'rhythm exercise' using Heel of the hand and Tip of fingers, with fills...the basic feel is a 'triplet' with a 6/8 pulse...I change it up and do different things with my hands/and pattern...
the movement goes like this to start...
H Tip Tip H Tip Tip
R L R L L R REPEAT..... 1triplet 2triplet 3triplet 4triplet ..1

				I incorporated the:
H T T H T T H T T H T T
r l r l l r
with:
H T T H T T H T T H T T
r r l l l r r r
and the rumba clave on my feet. Very difficult at first but after awhile one starts to hear the clave primarily and the hand pattern follows. Now just need to work on increasing speed.
thx, Johnny

				Hey guys,
If you could only do one exercise for speed which would it be? If you could only do one exercise for sound development which would it be?
My sound development would be one JC should me, I still do it, and I concentrate on making clear tones; HT(R), HT(L), Slap(R), HT(L), HT(R), Slap(L)....in the second round, the slaps turn to open tones, then muffs; it grooves nicely.
My speed exercise would be paradiddles, R,L,RR,L,R,LL....first tone of para flips between open and slap.
What about you guys :?:
Godspeed, Kaban

For sound development, I use this exercise alot. Many people credit it to Changuito..
You can change the slap to other tones. I always perform the exercise to a metronome, and clave track. I keep the main pulse with my right foot.
I really don't work on speed.

Interesting...why dont you work on speed?.... music is not at one tempo as we know...
here is some stuff for everyone to try out and work for speed as well what I call HEEL TIP DOUBLES/MAMI DADI'S
HTp HTp HTp HTp HTp HTp HTp HTp start out at about 60bpm and work your way to 120 bpm....
RR LL RR LL RR LL RR LL
HTp HTp TONE HTp HTp TONE HTp HTp TONE HTp HTp TONE
RR LL R LL RR L RR LL R LL RR L... then do Heel Tps to Slap then Heel Tps to Palm..then in combinations...and also always give equal time to the hands..2 to 5 minutes per exoercise per 'starting' hand..be it right or left... and have fun with it...

I have a limited time, unfortunately, to practice, so speed work gets left out.
I figure as my hand movements and tones improve, I can increase speed gradually and within the context of the clave.
That being said, I will try the exercise you posted. On your notation Johnny, does p refer to a "palm" tone and would this be different from a "bass"?
Thanks for sharing.

yes P is for Palm of the hand..it becomes a 'bass palm' when the drum is lifted and struck with the palm...palm strike is not a tone, just a movement... here is a Changuito mano secreto hand movement...
P Tp Tp P Tp repeat....... then reverse it Tp Tp P Tp P repeat.... also done with both hands seperately, and then together ... these are 5 strokes...
1 2 3 4 5 ps...this is done with the Palm of the hand not the Heel of the hand, so how u 'lift' the hand from the Tips is important. also the hand stays on the drum at the wrist for the Tips
