Is it just me or does this one sound a lot like the tumbao Patato plays ?

The pattern on the lower drums is the same, but those two offbeat slaps on either side of the three-side are a characteristic accent of samba that I don't recall Patato playing.

Cheers David, so is the 'tumbao' Patato is playing there more derivative of samba or the familiar Cuban (salsa) Tumbao ? I guess I always assumed the latter.

Hi Barrie,
Yes, I agree, the latter. As I'm sure you know, there's a standard tumbao pattern where bombo and the very next subdivision are played on the tumba on the three-side. What Patato did was play those two strokes on the tumba on both sides of clave like a bass does in salsa. That variation sounds somewhat similar to the surdo part in batucada. However, it seems that Patato was inspired by the Cuban bass (which he played), rather than the Brazilian surdo. Still, the similarity is there as you pointed out. As a matter of fact, I play something similar to what the guy on Youtube is playing because I like playing samba on two drums; I get to draw on some of my two-drum tumbao chops. Granted in doing so, I'm willfully letting Cuban sensibilities affect my samba playing.

Thanks David, it interested me as I've always been a fan of Patato's tumbao, it seems to drive a tune well, but never really got it down, something I keep promising myself I will do. Do you know of a basic transcription ? Giovanni explains it in one of his vids if I remember correctly, I'll try and locate that again as well.

You can clearly hear how he replicates a bass tumbao. Patato also played the tres and some of his tumbaos were guajeos on multiple congas.

I'm going to work on it ! I'm only playing with just two drums at the moment, so I need to translate what he's doing to make sense like that, I'm in the process of reheading one of my other drums and another has a broken tension rod.
