I found an example of Ghanaian music that has some of the elements that I mentioned in my previous post:

Note the son clave pattern on the bell and the second drummer from the right playing a "tumbao" throughout the whole song (except for his solo), as well as the maracas son pattern on the shekere.
It is however a modern composition, as stated in the description of the video, so obviously it doesn't proof anything to me, but still, I find it remarkable.
