I just seem to find a way to make the guajira fit everything, and have been bitten on the butt by it.
Tried out for a band. They said they appreciated my 'feel', but I sounded a bit shallow playing the same rhythm.
So, I'm looking for five or six rhythms and some practice resources.
Thanks!

				Hej JohnnyConga,
Thanks for the list. How do you play those rhythms? I play
Bolero UPSPUaAa
Son-tumbao UPSPUPAA
Cha cha cha UPSAUPAA (in faster parts sometimes UPSaUPAA)
mambo 2-3 UPSPUPAA|UPSaaPAA
bomba SPUmPaaP|UAUmPaaU and variations
where A is an open tone
S a slap
U heel
P fingertips
M muffled
small letters on tumba
And plena?
I think to play in a band you do not only need to play some rhythms, you also have to know when to play breaks and how and how to do some variations.

Salsaoberlinense....I would recommend that you pick up some Learn How to Play Conga DVD..like KALANI....or Tomas Cruz....to play in band takes a long time to learn how to do..there are many things to learn first before you can play in ANY band...."rhythms" and "styles", is just a part of the whole.....you have to KNOW your music, first....and how to play along with others...it takes a long time to be good just doing this, and a whole lot more...."JC" Johnny Conga....

				Hi there,
Yes, that's true for sure, Johnny. I recently saw Tomas Cruz' 2nd DVD. It's great but there was no plena in it. Just wanted to know how some of you play as I think most players have their own little bits of how to play to which rhythm.
