Hi,

I really like pilon and mozambique when playing funk. Does anybody have any other favorites?

Also, I know cuban mozambique and always forget New York style. I'd love to see a transcription.

This is now my default funk pattern.
It's at a tempo that you can watch and listen to Eddie 'Bongo' Brown as he plays it. And the song speaks for itself, very nice to listen to over and over until you get it down !

I haven't tried to play any yet but Michael Spiro's book conga drummers guidebook has the "Whats going on" pattern as well as some other funk patterns. I also ran into a cd of 70's Cuban music influenced by funk called Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats Of Revolutionary Cuba. I'm sure there are some patterns in there that can work. If anyone has this cd and can tell me what rhythm is being played on track 15 I would appreciate that. Thanks

There's a lot of good ideas & grooves to be learned from Brazilian music also.
There's a big variety & many regional styles to listen to. Some of it uses congas
in a very funky way.

I like 2 rhythms from the Tomas Cruz Volume II & III DVDs.
The Iyesa and Songo patterns work well over funk (Vol II).
The Marcha patterns from the Timba booklet work well also (Vol III).

Also, on his legendary video Anga Diaz put on a tremendous display of funk conga using the Pilon pattern.

Additionally, Kalani's DVD "Conga Jam" has a Songo pattern, as well as patterns for Funk and Pop that sounds good.

Very cool and "funky" Afro-Brazilian grooves there.

I remember Deodato from New York back in the early 70's...great orchestrator and the fact that he used Ray Barretto and Airto says it all...Johnny Conga...

Hey JConga, that was a very nice demonstration of the back-beat rhythm on congas. I don't generally like to hear it or play it on congas. Its so central to r&b, which I grew up on, and it has kind of worn on me. I think that's why I started listening to jazz at an early age, than African and world music, than Latin, after the "Buena Vistas Social Club" seem to have at least added to, if not caused, the availability of Latin music in my area. Most of the time I see it played on congas, its by someone who doesn't have good technique. You showed me that good technique, along with creativity can really make a rhythm come alive. The fills you used were well placed. Thanks again showing those of us, who still have much to learn, the ropes.
