Hello.
I am a rookie from England. I am supposed to play congas tomorrow instead of my real instrument, drumset. What should I play in Chan Chan? On the record it sounds odd...

Kevin, I was just listening a version of Chan Chan by la Banda Municipal de Cuba: it seems like a basic tumbao pattern, but I guess you can play it with a "Caballo" pattern also, if it´s being played in a slower tempo.

Hey Kevin,
You say that drumset is your "real instrument" - I can't say anything firsthand about the gig you've got coming up, but in my experience it's often better to go with the instrument that you feel completely at home with than trying to piece something together the day before the show (for me, this means sticking to my bare hands and not trying anything with sticks, even if I think it would fit better). I think you could definitely do something worthwhile with the drumset on this tune, with hihat subbing for maracas and toms/snare rim for congas, if that's where you feel more relaxed and at home. Again, I'm obviously not there, nor do I know how much say you have in the matter, or just how comfortable you are on the congas, so this is just a thought. If you opt for the congas, though, I would second the previous post - just keep a simple, sparse tumbao with tasteful variations.
