Where to buy a Chaworo?!

Postby seisporocho1 » Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:33 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good website that sells chaworos or is everybody making their own?
If so, does anyone have a good website to buy the bells and straps?!

Thanks.

Aha, I've been researching this for the set of bata I have coming in. I think most people make
their own, but this percussionist in my area Chris "Flaco" Walker advertises them on his site..

http://flaco.net/instrume.htm

These bell sellers have made some too..

http://www.classicbells.com/products.asp?cat=59

I'm planning on making my own a little ways down the road. These are the cheap
sellers of bells.

http://www.brassbells.net/index.html

a quick search on the net for sleigh bells will do yah good, these guys have a great size chart,
on the bottom of their page.
http://www.acmecarriage.com/sleighbells.htm

and ebay always has a ton of sleigh bells in different conditions. It seems like a lot of people
collect them though cuz they don't really go for cheap.

Thomas Altman describes his chaworo on his site, they use "sleigh bells" from what looks like one of those
percussion instrument wands for orchestral percussion. A great site.

I guess you can tell I've been doing some research, it's an interesting and esoteric topic for sure. Making
one seems like it will be a lot of fun so I am going that route.

BNB,
You are the man! Thanks for all those links.
I also know my teacher makes them and I got a feeling I'll end up buying the bells and making one myself too!

I just bought some bells from Classicbells.com. The owner, DeeAnna, was very helpful in terms of sizing and sound. They should arrive here in a few days. I'll let you all know how they sound and will post a few fotos.

Great timing of this post since I was also looking to get a set made with the bells I bought two years ago.. Remember BnB?
You are definitely "the man!"
FYI, I sent an email a few days ago to Chris "Flaco" Walker asking him if he'd make me a set like the really nice one he's got on his site, but he said, "no" I'm not making them to sell any more. He recommended anyone who works in leather - like shoe repair places.
Turns out that my first stop on this year's West Coast trip in Salt Lake City is a leather worker, and I'm getting some leather from him. Also, I've got the leather hole puncher, and threader from past projects, so we'll sit down and get a start on it with his help, and I'll finish it up on the trip.

I'll be posting with the progress - or digress along the month long trip along the coast.
FYI, I'm in SF 13th-16th of July! Hope to see you there!

When I make mine I plan on using either a military web belt or a wide leather belt, maybe from a thrift store and looping the bells through the holes.

This is what he told me as well a few weeks ago when I contacted him. He also said:

You can easily do this work yourself. You may be able to find a shoe repair person to sew the bells on for you. Use backing so as not to damage the body of the drum. Usually, facing on the top, a strand in the middle to hold the bell, and backing against the drum = 3 pieces of leather sewn together. You can find bells on the internet Here are a few links for sleigh bells:

http://www.chimacumtack.com/horseharnes ... ells.shtml

https://www.moonshineleather.com/leathersleighbells.cfm This is good for singles, not on a strap, and economical to buy individually.

Stick to sizes 4 through 10 only.

http:// http://www.aes24carrot.com/bells.htm

These are very cool, and hard to find: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/a ... on-leather

Remember that I suggest RUMP bells and ACORN bells.

Here are some bells to avoid: Never buy these kind
http://www.brassbell.com/gifts/dept.asp ... s&dept_id= 1099&WT.svl=deptnav1

Avoid Shaft bells, reindeer bells, and saddle chimes on this page, but DO buy the acorn bells and the rump bell straps -

http://bellsgalore.com/harnessbells.aspx

Another avenue is to check e-bay for south asian bells and antique bells. In my experience, the best chaguoró are composed of few bells, but where each one is unique, and there is a mixture of different shapes and sizes. Always go for antique, but without cracks, because the antique bells have more character and more ashé.

Avoid too many as it will become too heavy.

These were all very helpful tips.

I used ripped out thin leather jacket arms and strong sinew for string from friend in Utah. A semi-reddish color made sense. And since I'm not real adept at sewing, gave another friend, Betzi, $100 for sewing the bells and straps to some fasteners that would fit around both ends of the Iya. Been working on a collection of bells for the past 7 years, and it sounds nice.
